ADSL Speed Testing Your Connection

If you have a provider such as AT&T, before your ADSL or DSl speed tests are run you must find out some information. The first thing is if your connection is 'capped'. This means that your high speed connection might be severly restricted by the company who runs your wire into your place of business or home. What is the rated DSL speed that you are paying for? Many times it is 5 mbps upload speed and 20 mbps download speed. These providers do not want to give you unlimited connection speeds. If they did you could download huge files all day which would cost them much in bandwidth fees. They get charged money on how much bandwidth you use, and the faster your connection, the more data you push through the wire and therefore the more bandwidth you use. So many companies employ some sort of limiter on the lines so the average usage is kept and users are not sending tons of data at high speeds which clog the network. Imagine if all users did this? The internet would be chaos and many providers would lose tons of money.

Customers of DSL service around the world think they get the fastest possible speeds. But many times this is not true and the speed they receive for uploading and downloading is radically different.

A new crimp in the DSL speed slowdown is the use of VOIP phone service. The VOIP market is taking over since you can use the same physical cable to now get home phone service with VOIP. Many companies such as local cable companies, Vonage, and Tomato Vine offer these services. These VOIP phone plans are often quite cheap.

Most companies that provide DSL service also provide cable television. They do not tell you of the potential slowdown. All of these services are usually sent over the same DSL wire and routed by a splitter. One connection would go to your television and another through a cable modem to use your VOIP phone and DSL Internet connection.

Most companies contradict themselves and say ours is the fastest and we are X number of times faster speed than the next competitor. The DSL Speed Tests online do not lie...they tell the full truth but many factors as mentioned do affect speeds. We have come a long way since the advent of the 2400 baud modem. Remember the days of waiting 3 hours for a picture or anything for that matter. Now we cannot get it fast enough! Ten seconds for a picture and people are screaming! People forget the old days of slow speeds. Just 10 years ago these DSL speed would have been just a dream and now are almost considered old with the newer fiber connections. Many companies are spending BILLIONS on this new fast internet speed .

If you are looking for a DSL online speed test, make sure your router settings are correct so that an accurate score can be found. Many high speed dsl and also adsl operators and providers put filters on the line as well to prevent users from using too much speed and bandwidth on their computers. Bandwidth costs money and they are not going to give it away for free. When using the adsl or dsl testers, please keep this in mind when looking at the score. A quick call to the company you have service with might just help you out and let you calculate a better avrage adsl speed.

There are many websites that offer to test your DSL connection speed for free such as speakeasy, abeltronica, myspeed, wugnet, performance.toast.net, etc that are reasonably good and they also offer nominal fee Internet speed test at regular intervals. The results may not be 100% accurate but they sure give you an idea of your Internet speed. Search for one such website and test your Internet speed. If it points out a low speed than promised by your service provider, it is time for you to take action on your DSL service provider.

A free Internet DSL test, whether via a cable or DSL, is a great way to see how fast your connection speed is at your computer. Most companies claim very fast speeds but this really is determined in the optimum setup. Your speed could easily decrease based on how many people close to you are also on the same line or wire. The more people using DSL service or even DSL connection, the slower your speed will be to your computer.

DSL Internet connection has brought joy to millions of faces. We no longer have to wait to load pages from Internet unlike dial-up connections and the phone bills are not shooting up northwards either. All is well …. Ok well, until you start noticing that PC does not download faster than say 32 kbps while the speed committed by the ISP was 256 kbps. If you are working from a home office work from your end gets affected badly and you try to resolve by restarting the system, shutting down all unused programs, etc. In fact a PC can tell the speed capacity of the DSL but not of Internet Speed. Sometimes, it should correct and pick up speed. If it did not give a solution and you encounter same problem with every website you are visiting, it calls for some serious thinking.
